Generate a useful ICO from one clear square source image

ICO is a container that usually includes several pixel sizes, allowing a browser or operating system to pick an appropriate layer. A source image with a clear square silhouette survives small sizes better, and a transparent source can retain transparent areas.

Example: add a favicon for a website

Prepare a square PNG with comfortable edge padding, select 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, then create the ICO. A site should normally provide PNG or SVG favicons as well for modern browsers; the ICO can serve as a compatibility layer or Windows icon asset.
